Kwik Switch tool holders were developed by a company named Universal Engineering. They are one of the well-known designs widely used by professionals. These tool holders are using the automatic locking principle, where you use an adapter placed in the spindle and then you are able to quickly change your tools in the adapter rather than in the spindle itself. Therefore all the tool holders have the recognizable nuts on sides.
Here’s an instruction of use to such adapter and tool holder from Universal Engineering catalog 2008:
As the holder locknut is opened, coil springs are compressed. When the open position is reached, a mechanical latch holds the nut open. This latch is operated by a trigger pin. The trigger pin is depressed by one of the tool adapters lugs as the adapter is inserted into the spindle socket. When the trigger pin is depressed, it releases the compression springs. This causes the spindle nut to rotate which draws the tool adapter up into the locking angle tapered socket. Since locking force is always present, the nut continues to tighten under load. Universal Kwik-Switch Spindles are available to retrofit many machines.
Kwik Switch tool holders usually come with Universal Engineering Acura-flex collets. They will accept a wide range of cutting tools, providing a good level of flexibility and reliability. However, you must bear in mind that this system has many places for debris to clutter: collets, adapter. To have the maximum possible outcome and length of life of your machine, maintain it by cleaning the tools after each use. Store your tooling in a safe place and it will serve you well.
